Number two seed Rafael Nadal, David Nalbandian, James Blake, and Lleyton Hewitt all advanced to the second round of play today. Nadal easily took down Robert Kendrick, winning in straight sets (7-6(6), 6-3, 6-2).
Nalbandian battled for more than three hours in the searing heat against Serbian Janko Tipsarevic. Tipsarevic eventually had to retire due to the heat in the fifth set with Nalbandian ahead 6-7(5), 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-0, 2-1. Blake made quick work of Carlos Moya, winning 7-6(8), 6-2, 6-4. Hewitt played a grueling five sets to overcome American Michael Russell (3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3).
Tomorrow’s second round play includes Roger Federer vs. Jonas Bjorkman, Andy Roddick vs. Marc Gicguel, Marcos Baghdatis vs. Gael Monfils.
