Two Russians match their talents for the first slot in the quarterfinals: Maria Sharapova, number one seed, against Anna Chakvetadze, twelfth seed. The next slot will go to either Belgian Belle Kim Clijsters (fourth seed) or Swiss Miss Martina Hingis (sixth). I am delighted to say that I am currently watching the contest for the third slot between the US’s Serena Williams and Israel’s Shahar Peer. I don’t think it’s just their citrus-colored attire that make this one juicy match–quelle tennis! In the fourth slot, Nicole Vaidisova beat Lucie Safarova in two sets (6-1, 6-4) to represent Czechoslovakia in the next round. In minutes we’ll know her challenger, Shahar or Serena, it’s any woman’s game at this point…
p.s. Did you see Shahar smash that?!
p.p.s Serena takes it. Incredible.

Incredible is right. What a match! This one ranks up there among the best of ‘07–believe me–it will still be there in the top 10 come December.
I missed it, but I saw some highlights on late night ESPN. Wish I would have tivo’d that.
This Open has been pretty good so far. Some excitement, some comebacks, and some great matches.
Linus, I could not agree more! In fact, I’m going to quote most of your email here as I could not describe the feeling of watching this match better than you:
“The Williams/Peer match [was] one incredible amazing match. I can’t think of enough superlatives. Serena has such a huge heart–what a Fighter! This match had it all–outbursts of emotion, expletives, incredible shot-making from both players, huge points, adrenaline, momentum swings. Phew! Now I’m all wound up and it’s past my bedtime and good luck to getting to sleep. Wow–she is something–Serena. This is very similar to the match from the ‘05 Australian semi with Sharapova but all the more impressive because she hasn’t played regularly in so long.”
