Williams Defeats Vaidisova for Finals Slot

Posted by Kelly on Wednesday, January 24, 2007@ 7:43 pm

In Australian Open women’s semifinal play today, Serena Williams squared off against Nicole Vaidisova winning in two sets 7-6(5), 6-4. As improbable as it seemed two weeks ago, Williams only needs one more win to take the year’s first Grand Slam title. Prior to the tournament, she was ranked 81 in the world but is forecasted to return to the top 20 thanks to her slot in the finals.

Now playing are Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters to see who will face Ms. Williams in the final showdown Saturday and they are three games all in the first set. It sure looks to be an exciting year for women’s tennis.

So, the final–the rematch from 2005–who do you think will win? I know you want Maria to win but who do you think will win? I’m torn. On paper Maria should win, she is the favorite but I have no idea after seeing Serena tough out so many matches–she has such Nerve on the big points. I will be very Very keyed up watching it. Will you watch it live? I won’t get to see the beginning of it which I regret but I will get to see the last 3/4’s or so.

I firmly believe that Maria Sharapova will win the Australian Open in 2007. That’s why I took her in the MS vs. JJ bet we made. : D Want to make a new bet on MS vs. SW? You may have the opening bid…

I HOPE Serena wins but I don’t know what will happen. Sometimes players just…well, it just isn’t their day. I wouldn’t want to jinx Serena or sully my enjoyment of it by betting. Serena doesn’t concern you though? Not just a little room for doubt in there at what a great champion she is and how mentally tough she is? The pressure will ALL be on Sharapova. She’s the number one seed–she’s Supposed to win–she HAS to win. It will be very interesting to watch.

Awwww, Liney, c’mon!! No wager?! I don’t believe in jinxes, either. Why would my side be jinxed by betting and yours not? OR would I be jinxed and you be sullied? In any event, all bets aside, cliches in full glory: Maria Sharapova is tough mentally and physically and is going to beat the pants off Serena Williams tonight. Errrr, skirt, rather.

Alright then–so–what do you propose for a wager?

  6. Kelly - January 26th, 2007 at 5:24 am

Dunno. Money is a boring bet. Unless you’ve a better bet, let’s revive the MS/JJ wager with a twist: if Maria wins, we play at the court of my choice; if Serena wins (fat chance), we play at the court of your choice.

    Deal.

Deal. And since we’re actually commenting on the Nicole Vaidisova page, dare I say…Lolita parallel, anyone?! Mommy’s passport was accidentally thrown away by stepdaddy/coach…

That is deserving of a smile and a chuckle. Always thinking, you…
