Serena Williams: Australian Open Queen

It’s official, Serena Williams has defeated Maria Sharapova in a mere 63 minutes to win her third Australian Open singles title and eighth Grand Slam. Final score, 6-1, 6-2. To say that Serena spanked Sharapova would be a severe understatement. Sharapova could neither serve nor return the ball, Williams could do nothing but, therein lies the rub. Serena severely punished her opponent throughout the match, maintaining total control despite suffering a blow from the ball in the first set. Okay, time for me to begin reviewing those Gonzalez tapes.

I don’t know if I realize the import of what I witnessed tonight. To utterly thrash the number one player in the world as convincingly as Serena did–in a Grand Slam Final–a woman who is known for her fight–not being match tough as they say–how Talented is Serena? Sure Sharapova was just abysmal serving. Her serve is usually Very tough but it deserted her tonight. They talked about her practicing her serve for 20 minutes before the match. Not a good sign! The serve is the most intangible aspect of tennis. SO many things have to go right for it to be working. And when it aint woikin–it takes a lot of courage to try to change it and fix it Especially before a Slam Final. But in spite of Maria not playing her usual game–and let’s face it she was not on her game tonight–Serena left absolutely no doubt about Her game. No one can even remotely suggest that this match was choked away by Sharapova, or that Serena was somehow the beneficiary of Maria’s poor play. Serena just out and out dominated her.

I thought Maria was very gracious in her praise of Serena at the ceremony. She won some points with me for that. Serena–I get such a kick out of her–not arrogant, not proud, not silly, just a very affable, intelligent woman who enjoys herself. Her paying tribute to her departed sister was very touching.

I have never ever seen a number one trounced so soundly in a final. Number 2’s and 3’s and 4’s, etc–sure, but not the number one. Wow. It will take a while for this to sink in for me. I am so happy that Serena won.

What an astounding display of athleticism on the part of Williams. Sharapova barely even made an impression at the other end of the court. Let’s hope Serena holds her edge throughout the season and someone is up to the task of competing with her. I am so sick of one sided tennis matches!

You pretty much only get that on the men’s side. Granted Sharapova’s US Open win was fairly easy–it was not a whitewash the way this womens final was. You’ve got some tough veterans at the top and a whole host of not-yet-ready-for-prime-time players knocking on the door. The Women’s tour has a bright and exciting future–whereas for the men–who will challenge Federer?
